Disclaimer–I feel obligate to state that at no time while reading this book will my devotion and loyalty to Port City Java waver.  I do recognize the achievement of the Starbucks corporation and even thank them for being a trailblazer and paving the way for others to follow.

So far so good. This book grabbed me during the introduction. That doesn’t happen often. This book focuses on 5 principles for turning ordinary into extraordinary. I’m digging it thus far.

Principle 1: Make it Your Own

Principle 2: Everything Matters

Principle 3: Surpise and Delight

Principle 4: Embrace Resistance

Principle 5: Leave Your Mark

Quick Review on the Introduction

Starbucks has created a top down structure that gives employees or “partners” as they call them the freedom to be creative and own the business. They actually have a profit sharing program for employees who work 20 hours per week or more. It is common for employees to say, “This is my company, I am an owner, and I am responsible for creating greatness here, just as my treatment has been great.” I can think of atleast one church that wants its employees to say the same thing.

Another interesting thing is that Starbucks consistently spends more on training than they do on advertising. Create a great experience and the advertising will take care of itself.

The biggest story at Starbucks is that it is as much about people as it is about coffee.

It is by design, not default, that Starbucks leadership creates a powerful experience for its partners.

Starbucks has to work hard to stay small while growing big.

Starbucks opens 5 stores per day, 365 days per year.

We will deliver a drink that suits you every time–and create an experience in the process! The experience must fit the customer.

I keep thinking that these guys could just as easily be talking about church but their not. Their talking about the coffee experience. If they can get this jacked up about coffee then we’d better be more jacked about Jesus.

stay tuned…Principle 1 tomorrow

Wow a review of the introduction. That’s strong. Jump over to my blog, I am doing a review of the footnotes of Organized For Success.

How come some of your posts have comments open, and some don’t? Is it the new layout or are doing that on purpose?
