Hindsight #3:
Distribute titles sparingly. It is easier to give a title than to take one away. I know the natural thought is that if I give someone a title than it will set them up as a leader and it will be easier for them to recruit and people might respect them more. Here’s the problem. Titles don’t make leaders. There are tons of leaders at lifepoint who don’t and never will have a title. If you have to give someone a title in order for them to develop followers than they probably aren’t a leader. The reality of this hindsight is that not everyone that starts the journey with you will end it with you. Not everyone will stay in the same role six months from now as they are in today.
If you do issue a title make sure everyone understands that you are writing it in pencil.
This is great. I would add “…and ministry liberally.” When I was a single/young adult minister back in Texas, I read Terry Hershey’s great book, Giving the Ministry Away. It was a huge challenge but truly helps one “equip the saints for the work of the service.” It takes more work, but training and leading with teams has far more impact than the Lone Ranger Leader.
