I Plagiarize!

I just had to get that off my chest. Sometimes I quote parts of the Bible and don’t credit the author. Sometimes I will share an idea that I heard from someone else. I am ashamed of myself!

Just today I heard about a church that was questioning the Pastor because he sometimes uses Rick Warren’s sermons as an idea starter. Wow! Are you kidding me? Personally, I love originality but sometimes you need some fuel for your fire. I don’t care where an idea comes from as long as It passes through the filter of my life and the Holy Spirit. Who cares if its original. My goal is not to be witty, clever, or even original. I’m not writing a term paper. My calling is to present the timeless message of Jesus in a way that 2007 Wilmington understands and applies.

If I’m not mistaken even Jesus quoted the prophets…and didnt always give credit.

For the record, if anyone wants to use any Jeff Kapusta or Lifepoint material just go for it. Matter of fact don’t even mention my/our name.

But, using your name always opens so many doors!

Ed Young Jr. Originated the idea of the bench and then we modified it and made it fit lifepoint.

We left a very gifted church a few years back after sitting through the pastor’s first person delivery of Jon Ortberg’s “It All Goes Back In the Box” (referring to his grandmother’s lessons in the game of Monopoly).

I had heard the sermon 10 years ago on tape and was shocked, saddened, and ultimately disgusted that a mature, godly, educated senior pastor could stand up in front of his congregation and basically lie about his own life experiences.

Hipsters have done their best to hijack Christianity and it would be absolutely hilarious watching all these wannabes imitate each other if it weren’t so very tragic. I’ve seen Ed Young Jr. on TV once and “hip trying to look young” is a pretty good description of him. But he’s got a lot of imitators out there.

Hey, I’ve been there, done that, bought the T-shirt! I fell for the whole Purpose Driven thing back in 2000, back when it was still relatively fresh and seemingly original. I bought into all of it (music, performance, dramas, felt needs, fresh start, letters, etc.). The reason it ultimately fails is because its driving force is one of subtle arrogance. But you can’t really see it ’til you’re out of it.

Hip Christianity is what we would’ve had in John 6 if the disciples had had their way. I think HIP stands for Heavily Influenced by Peers.
