What is it?
How do you get it?
How do you keep from losing it?
How do you get it back once you’ve lost it?
What can you do to fuel it?
Why does this organization have it an this one doesn’t?
Momentum is something that every organization desires. Momentum is a beautiful thing when you have it and a very frustrating thing if you’ve lost it. It’s easy to spot an organization or an object that has momentum. It is moving. However, the closer you look you find that momentum is nothing more than one moment followed by another followed by another. It’s like a video tape. We typically record at 29.97 frames per second. What that means is that ever second there are 29.97 moments that create motion.
I don’t believe the question is how do we generate or keep momentum but how do we make the most of every moment. How do we make this moment the best it can be and then the next and then the next. What can you do today to make it the best it can possibly be? What about tomorrow? What about next week? Try this…When you wake up in the morning say, “This is my moment. I can make the most of it or I can waste it. The choice is mine.” If you start to do that every day I truly believe that you will experience a life of momentum.
One moment after another…momentum.
jeff,
love your thoughts here. i’ve learned this the hard way…focusing so much on the preferred future without proper focus on the present will make you a frustrated leader that no one wants to follow.
and we think focusing all of our energy on the destination creates momentum…but you are so right…it’s the day to day, moment by moment advances that build it.
good word!
