I just finished reading an incredible book by Christian George, called Sex, Sushi, and Salvation: thoughts on intimacy, community, & eternity. This is by far one of the best books I have read in the last year. I have to admit that I had never heard of Christian George. This was one of those books where the title grabbed me because…well, Sex, Sushi, & Salvation are some of my favorite things. After reading the first page I was hooked. Here are a few of the one liners that stood out to me:
- To know God is to be intimate with Him. A first-base relationship is not enough. A faith that flirts cannot satisfy a God who loves.
- when referencing 2 Cor. 5:21–In other words, God beat His little boy with the belt reserved for us…
- God gives us the desire for intimacy so He can satisfy it.
- When divinity desires humanity, a beautiful chemistry follows.
- Are you hungry for God or are you full of yourself?
- Jesus doesn’t stand at the door and knock for His sake, but for ours.
- When we encounter the Bible, we discover that it has already encountered us.
- Christians belong to God by creation and redemption. Â In Him we were made and remade, formed and reformed.
- Salvation is not a staircase filled with souls that climb to God. We stand not on a ladder but on an escalator–God pulls us to himself moment by moment and day by day.
- He took the mess we were and makes us into masterpieces that are worthy to be hung in the galleries of glory.
- It’s a dangerous thing to bore a powerful God.
- In reference to Rev. 19:11-12–In other words, Christ isn’t an impotent husband who needs viagra to accomplish His will. He can satisfy His bride better than that. He is the might Rock of Ages. That’s why the most seeker-friendly strategy a church can implement is the elevation and exaltation of Jesus Christ.
- When the Israelites set up camp they always put the temple at its center.
- God is the author, editor, and publisher of our lives. In Him we are written and distributed to a world that needs the good news of the Gospel of Christ.
- Worship is giving to God what He has already given to us.
- Suffering must be experienced before it can be explained.
- A faith that doesn’t cost much isn’t worth much.
- God forges His servants on the anvil of affliction.
- We often suffer from never having suffered.
- Jesus called a nobody somebody.
- Sympathy without empathy is simply pity.
- You never really know someone until you fight them.
- It’s not about my opinion of God; it’s about God’s opinion of me.
- The love of God bled the Son of God for the people of God.
Just go buy the book for yourself…you won’t be disappointed.
I must read next, and then must read your new Steve Jobs book.
