I didn’t like sushi until I tried it.  Even after I tried it I wasn’t too sure about it.  Something about the texture seemed a bit off.  However, after my first sushi experience I found myself wanting to try it again.  Before I knew it I was hooked.  I started with a Crunch Roll (which technically isn’t really sushi) then moved on to spicy crab or spicy shrimp, then I tried a philadelphia roll, and now I even enjoy a tuna roll.  I’m expanding my horizon’s slowly.  Here’s the interesting thing about Sushi…I didn’t know that I would like it until I tried it.

Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to hear Greg Surratt talk at the ARC conference.  Greg said that they asked people, “what would make you want to attend church?”  The answers were astounding.  The number one answer that was reported was, “if I could experience God there.”  Isn’t that amazing.  We are reaching out to a culture that is reaching out for God but they can’t seem to find Him in our churches!  Many people are looking for a taste of God but they are walking away hungry.

Back to the Sushi…My first experience with Sushi didn’t win me over but it sure did create a desire to try it again.  It was somewere around my second or third time eating Sushi that I began to develop an appetite for it.  Now I crave it.

Are we creating space in our churches for people who are looking to experience God?  At what point in our services do people who do not know Jesus have an encounter with Him?  It will probably take more than once but I believe that if people can get a taste of God that they will desire more and before you know it they will develop an appetite and a craving for Him.
