I’ve learned that Leadership capacity comes in all shapes and sizes. When I first graduated college I was new to the arena of leadership. I had never really led anybody…atleast not intentionally. I would say my capacity was pretty small. Over the years I feel that I have grown as a leader. I’ve still got a long way to but I’m not where I once was.
As I look back over two years of leading at summer camp, seven years of leading in student ministry, and three years of pastoring a church I can pinpoint several influences that have caused me to increase my leadership capacity.
The first is through books. When I graduated college I said I would never read another book. I was wrong. As I’ve increased in leading I’ve increased in learning. It’s not enough to learn new ideas you must apply what you’ve learned. Some of the books that have stretched me have been: Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley, Radical Reformission by Mark Driscoll, 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell.
The second influence has been conferences. Catalyst, Drive, ARC, C3, and Unleash
are just a few of the conferences that have help to stretch my leadership capacity.
The third influence has been other leaders. While I have always had some high capacity leaders around me I think it is important to seek out leaders that are several paces down the trail than you. I’ve been privileged to surround myself with guys like Matt Fry, Perry Noble The Wraith , Gary Lamb, Tadd Grandstaff The Revenge of Frankenstein full movie
, Chris Elrod, Tony McCollum download The Golden Compass dvd
, and Michael Lukazeswski.
I believe my job as a leader is to constantly improve my leadership ability and capacity no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Romans 12:8 says, “If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously.”
