The name alone sounds funny. “Hey man I was checking out your twitter the other day…” I can understand why some people have a hard time grasping the concept. What’s funny is that I have become some kind of a twittervangelist. At random moments I catch myself trying to get people to sign up for a twitter account. The odd thing is that I get no benefit from it. No kickbacks. Why would a guy get so excited about something that seems so weird. Great question. Here’s a few reasons why I love twitter.
- It fills in the gaps. Call me crazy but I enjoy hearing what you ate for lunch or that you gave your dog a haircut. It is a bit like digital stalking but I find it helps me know about people’s lives better.
- It is concise. With only 140 characters you have to be selective with your words. Emails get lengthy and Facebook is overloaded. Seriously, I don’t want to join your mafia or start a farm or be selected as your favorite person.
- I learn from others. I love the leadership insight and Biblical insight that gets shared on a constant basis.
- I can celebrate with others. I love hearing what God is doing in other churches.
- It is Viral. I love seeing people twitter during church. I know it may be annoying to some but think about this. A Biblical truth that is shared during a sermon can instantly be twittered and facebooked within a minute. Within 5 minutes it has been retweeted and view by possibly thousands of people. How can you not get excited about a vehicle that can carry the Gospel to thousands in a matter of minutes?
- It’s fun. I love the tongue in cheek humor that people share on twitter.
- It’s networking. I’m amazed at the people that I will send a message to on twitter that I would never email. It’s a great relationship starter.
