In my recent readings of Scripture God has been creating a new friendship between me and a fellow named Hezekiah. I like this guy. He’s teaching me all kinds of things. Over the next few days I hope to share some of what I’m learning with you.
The first thing he is teaching me is the value of choosing your legacy.
Hezekiah becomes king at the young age of 25. 25 years of life experience is hardly enough to prepare you for leading a nation but that’s where the power of legacy kicks in.
2 Chronicles 29:2 tells us that, “he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that David his father had done.” Here’s the interesting thing, David was not Hezekiahs dad. His dad’s name was Ahaz and he was not a good king. However, rather than following the legacy of his father he chose to follow the legacy of David instead. Hezekiah chose to stand on the shoulders of King David and carry his legacy.
Hezekiah teaches that regardless of your lineage you can choose the legacy that you want to carry on. He tells us that you are not a victim but rather a victor.
