Just recently I received a book in the mail from Pastor Devin Kerns of Church on the Cape, titled, “The Valley of Vision, a collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions” by Arthur Bennett. This is a book that I have heard quite a bit about and have consider purchasing but never took the plunge. I want to say a huge thanks to Pastor Devin for this gift.
Here is a snippet from the first page…
Let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is the healed heart,
that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
that to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
that to give is to receive,
that the valley is the place of vision.
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
they life in my death,
they grace in my sin,
thy riches in my poverty,
thy glory in my valley.
The Puritans have received a bad rap. The prayers in VofV have been a staple in the Williamson household. You will come to love the way God revealed himself to this people.
