Kids grow up fast! Real Fast!
It’s crazy to think that when we moved to Wilmington my daughter was only 3 years old. Now she is 9! The years have flown by!
Last year around Valentine’s Day I took her on a date to Chic-fil-a. She put on a dress and mom did her hair in rollers. She was beautiful! As this Valentine’s Day approached, Kenly asked me if we were going to go on a date again…and she kept asking everyday until I “asked her out.” She’s pushy, I know!
We set a date for Monday night of this week. I went out ahead of time and bought her some flowers, her favorite candy, a little bear, and I wrote her a card. I rung the doorbell just a few minutes ahead of schedule. She was beaming! She had put on a skirt, brushed her hair, and painted her nails for our date. I walked her to the car, opened her door, and we were off. I think we talked for 2 straight hours! We ate at K38 and then followed it up with some Frozen Yogurt at Sweet Frog. When I took her home she asked if we could do this again sometime. I told her “yes” but we have to make sure mom doesn’t get jealous!
I tell you this because someday my little princess is going to be getting asked on all kinds of dates. (I’m not sure how I’m going to handle this!) It is my hope that every guy she goes on a date with will have to measure up to the standard that I set. He’d better be a godly man. He’d better be on time. He’d better open a door. He’d better have a plan. He’d better pay for the bill. He’d better honor her. And He’d better honor her parents.
Dads, how do expect our daughters to spot a loser if we don’t show her what a winner looks like?

I’ve still got some motorcycle leathers you can wear to greet the young man at the door. Seems to have the desired effect.
Great post. Love the last line!
Actually I just got home from our Daddy Daughters Date Night (6YO and 16YO) tonight. Went for some Mani’s and Pedi’s and I just told my wife that even though it may be hard work to be a great dad, it sure is worth it!
Yes, time does fly…fast!
Dale, If you’ve got a 16 YO you can teach me! THanks for being an awesome dad!
jeff this is awesome!! my daughter is 5 now. we went to chic file last year for valentines as well. i totally agree with you. i pray over her every night, and also pray that God would start preparing her future husband as well, and they meet in His time. we need to catch up bro been too long since promise keepers at C3.
So cool Cary! We’ll never know the full impact of our prayers this side of eternity. Keep it up!
WAY – TO – GO. More daughters need to see dads like yourself willing to dive in at her level. That one on one time is so important, and you’re 100% correct that you need to model what a MAN is for her. How else is she going to learn? I’m writing a book on the subject; I’d love to interview you for it. Reach out if you interested. Email, Twitter, wherever.
Thanks for being a dad….
